Unrecongized Web Service Errors

I received a string of unrecognizeable errors with the Directions API early this morning start from August 28, at 3:49 AM EDT and ending around 5:00 AM EDT.

At 3:49 AM it started with a web exception attempting to send a request to the Directions API:

A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond

At 3:51 AM we recived another error while attempting to send a web request

System.Net.WebException: The request was aborted: The operation has timed out.

At 4:06 AM and stretching all the way to 5:00 AM we received two errors when sending web requests

System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (504) Gateway Timeout.

System.Exception: Map quest directions calculation failed. Error processing request: Error invoking doRoute: Error invoking doRoute: route.tt.b2b.mapquest.com

The last exception message in bold is one I have never seen before. That error came from a succesful request to Directions API and is contained in the response of that request.

What are the causes of these errors during that time period?

We did not see any issues
We did not see any issues with the directions api this morning. There are no issues on internal, external, or authentication layer monitors. No other users have contacted us with any similar issues. But that route.tt.b2b.mapquest.com error message does look like what we would see internally. Which key/account were you using? Can you provide the failing requests?

Here is an example of a request performed:

The 503 error can be consistently reproduced by running the request multiple times in a short time span.

Also, I received a new type of error from MapQuest on August 29, 10:27 AM EDT

Error processing request: Error invoking doRoute: Error invoking getRouteShapeFromSession. Server returned HTTP response code: 503 for URL: http://sessionread.platform.mapquest.com:80/mq/mqserver.dll?e=0&GetRoute...

We did see some issues this
We did see some issues this morning (8/29) and the operations team is investigating the cause of session servers getting out of sync. I'm still not seeing any issues from yesterday though. What timeframe were the errors on 8/28?

Our exception logs started

Our exception logs started capturing errors on Aug 29 between 3:49AM and 5:00AM EDT

That fits what we say this
That fits what we say this morning. The operations and route teams are looking into it now. Let us know if you keep seeing these errors.
